Skill and Will Quadrant Synopsis
Communication is the key to life. From corporate presentations and job interviews to personal conflicts and interpersonal communications, our success in life - and in any given moment - often relies on our ability to successfully transmit an important message to others. Anyone who has ever engaged in a dispute with his or her spouse, boss, or child can attest to the fact that effectively communicating a message to even one person is a challenge (particularly when that person is not motivated to see things from your perspective). Individuals who rely on their ability to communicate for their livelihood, such as corporate presenters or sales people, face an even more daunting task: effectively communicating a message to each participant in the audience, regardless of whether that participant is receptive to the message or not.
In response to these challenges, Carolina Rodriguez, a Six Sigma Master Black Belt and NLP Specialist , began developing an improved communication model for communicators, leaders, and managers. Her work resulted in the Skill and Will Quadrant, an innovative approach to personal and professional communication. Modeled from Ken Blanchard’s Blanchard Situational Leadership Model, the Quadrant was designed to help communicators learn how to best connect with each of their listeners, whether in a one-on-one dialogue or in a presentation to a large audience.
Rodriguez identifies and explains the effect of a listener’s level of motivation (will) and training (skill) on his ability and willingness to understand a message. In the simple but ever-changing relationship between skill and will, an individual’s will is controlled by his level of skill. Inversely, a person’s level of skill is affected by his level of will. In terms of communication, some listeners do not have the skill to comprehend a message, while others lack the desire or motivation to try (will). Identifying and placing participants in the Quadrant – and understanding why each participant falls into that specific category – enables communicators to effectively prepare the participant to hear and comprehend the message.
Identifying and understanding quadrant placement also helps leaders shift participants from their current level of skill and will to a higher placement in the quadrant. For instance, a low will, high skill participant can be moved to a high will, high skill placement if the communicator is able to assess and appropriately motivate that individual to hear the message. Rodriguez offers helpful suggestions for leaders and communicators on how to assess their recipient’s level of skill and will and tailor their message to appeal to the recipient.
By learning how to place individuals in the appropriate place in the Quadrant, readers will better understand how to successfully convey important messages to their listeners. The Skill and Will Quadrant is a must-read for communicators at any level.
The Skill and Will Quadrant was designed to help leaders learn how to best manage and communicate with individuals. The Quadrant is based on the factors of skill and will and is used to weigh an individual’s strengths against his or her weaknesses. To be effective at communicating and encouraging production, leaders and communicators must carefully evaluate an individual’s level of motivation (will) and training (skill).
The Skill and Will Quadrant provides specific strategies for communicating with individuals in each quadrant.
